BUA-Seminar/ Predatory publishing as a geopolitical challenge in scholarly communication

Emanuel Kulczycki (Adam Mickiewicz University)

In his talk, Prof. Emanuel Kulczycki (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań) will explore will explore the significant role played by predatory journals in scholarly communication. The presentation will be divided into two parts, each shedding light on different aspects of predatory publishing. The first part will focus on empirical research findings concerning predatory academia, such as key issues related to Beall's List and citations of papers published in predatory journals. It will provide insights into the challenges researchers face when dealing with predatory publishing and the potential consequences it might bring to their careers.

The second part of the talk will introduce the concept of "mislocated centers of scholarly communication." Drawing from an analysis of journals published by MDPI, the talk will highlight the geopolitical challenges faced by researchers, librarians, and decision-makers responsible for shaping science and education policy in academic institutions. By examining these challenges, the presentation aims to stimulate discussions on how to address the issues posed by predatory journals and their impact on the scientific community.

Emanuel Kulczycki will speak at the BUA-seminar 'So geht Wissenschaft - Aktuelle Diskussionen zu Open Science und Forschungsqualität', hosted by Professor Martin Reinhart (Humboldt-Universität Berlin/Robert Merton Center for Science Studies).
