What is novelty — and, would you know it if you saw it? The Metascience Novelty Indicators Challenge ("MetaNIC") is an ambitious, global research project to collect expert human assessments of novelty, to design automatic evaluations of novelty in research, and then to bring the computer-aided tools towards the human judgment. Sponsored by and co-designed with the UK Metascience Unit, MetaNIC aims to engage tens of thousands of researchers across the world, and subsequently to impact multiples more. At the core is the conceptualization and operationalization of novelty in research; this session will develop this construct.
