Prof. Dr. Nelius Boshoff and Dr. Similo Ngwenya (Center for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology, Stellenbosch University, South Africa) will present a paper on the relationship between open science and international collaboration in Africa. Professor Dr. Isabella Aboderin (Chair in African Research and Partnerships, Director of the Perivoli Africa Resarch Centre, University of Bristol) will be the discussant.

The focus of the presentation of Similo Ngwenya and Nelius Boshoff is on the relationship between open science and international collaboration in Africa, as part of a broader reflection on potential consequences of open science in and for Africa. In doing so, two additional topics of open science in Africa will first be explored. The first deals with open science in Africa as a policy issue, where examples will be discussed of how open science is presented in African science policy (or not), as well as examples of current initiatives in open science in Africa, and the drivers of those initiatives. The second topic deals with open science in Africa as an academic interest, where an overview will be presented of academic research related to the theme of open science in Africa, and the issues that dominate the academic literature. Together, these two topics will enable discussions about future research needed to explore the relationship between open science and international collaboration in the context of Africa.

As Director of the Perivoli Africa Research Center, our discussant Isabella Aboderin is a key facilitator of the new Africa Charter on Transformative Research Collaborations, together with the University of South Africa's Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair and the University of Cape Town's Institute for Humanities in Africa (HUMA).

The lecture and discussion is organized in cooperation with the Berlin Center for Global Engagement of the BUA and the Robert Merton Center for Science Studies of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Please send an email to stefan.skupien@berlin-university-alliance.de by 18.9.2023 to register for the lecture.
