How do we know what we know about the universities of the world? What kinds of infrastructural arrangements make it possible for universities to be seen as comparable and commensurable entities? This talk aims to trace how, over the past century and a half, universities have been made visible through a range of information technologies—from printed yearbooks and international surveys to computers and databases and, more recently, cloud-based analytics. Of central interest are layered historical sediments that, in conjunction with these technologies, shape how universities are seen, classified, and governed, and thus how specific "global" regimes of visibility and invisibility are produced.
