Journée d’études, Libertés académiques en Europe, Sorbonne-Nouvelle, Paris/
Half-day research and policy seminar on "Libertés académiques en Europe. Perspectives croisées"

Co-organized and moderated by Lise Moawad (RMZ, Humboldt Universität) with Andrea Di Ruzza (IEE, Sorbonne-Nouvelle).

The issue of academic freedom is as topical as it is polarising in academic and political circles, in France and elsewhere. Whether we are talking about the Central European University's move to Vienna following pressure from the Hungarian government in 2018, the recent debates surrounding the privatisation of research funding in Germany or Gabriel Attal's 'unannounced' visit to the Sciences Po board of directors in March 2024, there is only one word in all mouths: academic freedom, yet referring to very different realities. The idea of this half-day study session is to tackle an issue that may have already been dealt with many times over. It aims, however, at emphasising the multiplicity of possible definitions, the diversity of theoretical frameworks and ideological backgrounds that they imply, and the ambiguity of the resulting practical consequences. By crossing perspectives with panelists from different fields, disciplines and geographical areas (among others Dr. Cornelia Schendzielorz), we hope to highlight the extremely complex nature of this issue and encourage further dialogue, both within universities and between researchers and politicians.
