Matters of Research Assessment and its Implementation (MAI)

(06/2023 - 10/2026)

Principal Investigator: Dr. Cornelia Schendzielorz

Researcher: Lise Moawad, Maximilian Weise

The project “Matters of Research Assessment and its Implementation” (MAI) aims at analysing, consolidating, and implementing the state-of-the-art practices in research assessment in a multi-level perspective. It will contribute within the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) both to create a common understanding and guidance on current developments and principles in research assessment and to open up a discussion space. Furthermore, it will participate in the debate on initiatives how to reform research assessment in policy, funding, and science organizations.

The innovation group "Matters of Research Assessment and its Implementation" (MAI), led by Dr. Cornelia Schendzielorz (HU, RMZ) and Dr. Miriam Kip (QUEST), consists of two separate projects. The RMZ (MAI-A) project deals with the evaluation and governance of research collaborations. The project based at the BIH Quest Center (MAI-I) focuses on the applied optimization of research evaluation in the area of appointments and tenure track evaluations at individual BUA institutions.

The focus of the work being conducted at RMZ is dedicated to the question of how the evaluation of research associations can be designed to be effective and targeted in the long term. In a first step, a systematic survey will be conducted to determine which quality standards are proclaimed for research networks, associations and university alliances by national and European science policy actors. After that, a comparative analysis of selected (trans-)national and European alliances and associations, as well as institutionalized research collaborations will be carried out in order to identify conditions for achievement and benchmarks for good governance of research collaborations. The aim of the project is to provide an overview of the evaluation and governance of research networks and to open up a discussion space for reforming research evaluation within the Berlin University Alliance. Thereby fathoming out how the BUA can be positioned as a crucial element of the Berlin research landscape in the existing national and European university initiatives, research networks, associations, and university alliances.
